Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800189726

Every issue must be decided solely on the basis of what is best for our Nation. In my judgment this bill does not meet that test. If this bill is not best for America. only harm can come to America because of Its enactment. Because of the impossibility of careful screening. as has been demonstrated. because the admission of more immigrants will accentuate our own housing problem and will contribute to eventual unemployment In the United States. because there are plenty of other places in the world where there Is far more room for the displaced. persons than in the United Statesfor all these reasons. Mr. PresidentI oppose the passage of this bill.
