My point is that If we are to continue to keep a great many people in a state of suspense like that. then it is high time we had some law which dealt with that particular situation. The purpose of the amendment is to deal with it in a lawful way. The Senator mentioned the act which gives to the Attorney General the ability to extend the visas. and extend the right to remain. in meritorious cases. What is the final result of a situation like that? When is the final determination made? Obviously that kind of a person could not come in under the provisions of this bill without my amendment. The next thing he would have to do would be to return to a displaced persons camp or return to his own countryto which he cannot returnand come in under some immigration quota. or go back to another country which might keep him until he could be included under some immigration quota. It seems to me there is a group of people here who are in a state of suspense. with no definite law that deals with their specific cases.
