Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800166664

We do not need to appropriate great sums for a longrange Government housing program in addition to the existing legislation. It will be a lot easier to make our existing laws work and utilize the legislation which we have already created to do this job than to set up new agencies. new bureaus. and additional road blocks in the path of private enterprise builders who have made great strides since the end of the war in solving the housing shortage. If we would review some of the basic problems and maintain our highwage living standard instead of adopting policies such as the Selective Free Trade Reciprocal Trade Act. which puts our workers in direct competition with the lowwage European and Asiatic workers. so they would have the means to build. our efforts would offer greater rewards.
