Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800156056

Evidence was produced before my committee showing that in all the large cities of the country. having a population in excess of 100.000. the death rate was higher than the birth rate. except in the case of Salt Lake City. What effect Mormonism may have had on that I do not know. The fact is that all the large .cities with a population of more than 100.000 would have dried up in the course of time had it not been for the migration of men. women. and children from other parts of the country. particularly the South. where the birth rate indicates they are more prolific in the production of children. Their population was. of -course. also maintained by immigrants from across the seas.
