Session #80 · 1947–49

Speech #800037637

The time was extended from December 31. as we had it in the House bill. until January 30. The House conferees agreed to the Senate amendment. The Senate also adopted an amendment which provided that Mexican laborers who had entered this country illegally might remain in the country until December 31. 1947. if they were engaged in agricultural employment and remained so engaged. providing the employer gave a satisfactory bond and other assurances to the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service. As I understand it. representatives of the Immigration and Naturalization Service have been picking up these people who came in illegally and taking them back to Mexico. They are badly needed now as agricultural labor. This amendment simply provides that they may stay here under certain conditions. but they must all leave by December 31. 1947.
