The French nation had given the Statue of Liberty to the American people and our Government has set aside space for it on Bedloe Island. but efforts to raise funds to construct a base had failed. Mr. Pulitzer remembered how he. as a boy of 17 entering Boston harbor. had looked eagerly for the land of promise to rise upon the horizon. Libertys statue. he determined. would be the future beacon of welcome to immigrant boys.
