Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790265895

I entered a motion to reconsider the vote by which House bill 5125. to establish the Castle Clinton National Monument in the city of New York. and for other purposes. was passed. Castle Clinton was built in 1808 as a fortification at the Battery in New York Harbor. It was later ceded to the city and renamed Castle Garden. when it became a center of public and social life. In the period 1855 to 1890 the structure served as the principal immigration station for the United States. receiving more than twothirds of the immigrants arriving in that period. More recently the structure housed New York Citys Aquarium. until 1941. From various civic leaders and outstanding citizens of New York City. for all of whom I have the highest regard.
