I have frequently reflected upon the debt we owe to those who seek haven within our borders. The Bible instructs us to "cast thy bread upon the waters"-Ecclesiastes xi. verse 1. The life and death of Sidney Hillman illustrate the wisdom of that ancient Biblical teaching. Hillman became an American immigrant at the age of 20. That is the age of comprehension. and this young man. having lived for 20 years as a victim of religious. political. and economic oppression. always remembered. Remembering and understanding. he became a veritable watchdog against the root cases of oppression wherever he found them in the country of his mature citizenship.
