Here the Irish organized the West End Improvement Association. one of the first community civic associations in the United States. Annually the north Irishmen assemble at Deep River. Iowa. on July 12 to celebrate the IrishOrangemens Day. The Scandinavian settlements in Iowa commenced at an early date. They formed compact communities in many of the counties of the northern and central parts of the State and at some places in the southeast and southwest. The Danes constituted more than half of these immigrants and were often found along with the Norwegians. The largest Danish settlement was established in the western part of Audubon County and in Shelby County. The Swedes settled more independently.
