While the first explorers. missionaries. and traders were Frenchmen from Canada. the white men who followed came predominantly from the New England States and New York. They were young men who were seeking their fortune in the West. They laid the foundations for the business enterprises. They established the banks. insurance companies. the commercial enterprises. The indus.trial undertakings had their inception mainly with the German immigration which brought the skilled artisans and mechanics. They established the tanneries. machine shops. breweries. shoe factories. and so forth. Many of the names prominent in the early commercial life are still prominent in Milwaukee todayPlankinton.
