Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790106114

I move to strike out the last word. Mr. Chairman. 2 years ago some of us stood on the floor of the House when the Chinese Exclusion Act was up for a test and met the same arguments that have been made here today. The argument made then was that we were discriminating against a people. against a nation. an organized nation. China. probably the oldest nation in the world. We were made to believe then. at least we were justified in believing. that that would be the last of this kind of onslaught upon the welldefined principle of the American Government. known as restrictive immigration. but today we notice that the immigration law is changed with abandon and altered very materially. Those who have stood here have argued to us on the basis that this admits only 75 to 100. We do not know whether that is the number that will be admitted.
