Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790106035

Now. it is constitutionally within our power on the floor of this House to control the numbers admitted under the quota system. We set both the numbers and the quotas here. Anybody who does not like the numbers of people who come to this country can say so. and if enough of them do not like the numbers of people coming from other nations to this country. we can. with legislation on the floor of this House. decrease those numbers. At any time we choose. we can say people from other countries are coming here in such numbers as to.threaten our standards of living and dilute our American traditions and our American culture. and we can. if we wish. cut down the numbers. I am addressing myself not to numbers who come under the quota system which it is entirely within the power of the gentleman from Louisiana. and likeminded people if there are enough of them. to control. What is important is that there shuld not be legislation discriminating on color lines on the statute books of a country which claims to believe in no discrimination against people because of the shape of their noses or the slant of their eyes or the color of their skin. Such legislation must be taken off our books. because the greatest American principle. the very greatest principle of all. or so I believe. is that every man stands equal inthe eyes of God and of Uncle Sam.
