To now outmoded military and nonconclusive economic reasons of expediency there were often advanced in the hearings reasons of political expediency. These. i believe. were the most cogent of all. Many expert witnesses pointed out that in the years ahead it will matter greatly to us. in terms of our oxn national security. whether the Asiatic countries veer toward democracy as wc know it. or toward the Soviet brand of democracy. Mr. Owen Lattimore. one of the experts on the Far East. who is currently being widely read and listened to. not only by laymen but by people in the State Department. suggests that after the war there is going to be a great deal of shopping around. so to speak. among the Asiatic peoples. particularly colonial peoples. for political ideologies. And he rightly feels that they will buy that ideology which promises them most in terms of their own economic and spiritual security. The peoples of Asia are awake and on th3 march.
