Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790104482

Mr. President. yesterday the Senate Committee on Immigration -ufianimously reported House -bill 3466. It is very imnportant that this bill be considered at the earliest possible .time. Under the Nationality Act of 1940 any natuialized citizen of.this country loses .his nationality by residing for at least 2 years in a foreign state of which he was formerly a national. Sincd the outbreak of the war. due to the fact that many naturalized American citizens were caught in. their native countries and could not return to the United States. we have on two occasions e6tended the .time in ordei to permit them anopportunity to return and thereby save their citizenship. The bill to which I have referred confers no right or beneficial privilege of any character on any person who is not already a citizen of the United States. It merely extends until the 14th of October 1946. the time within which such persons may return and save their American citizenship.
