But why should Harry Bridges. an undesirable citizen. be pointed out in America as being the one perfect example of what labor can do? I cannot understand it. when so many other millions of American laboring men have done as well or far better than he has done. The record which was made in the deportation proceedings. which because of our flimsy methods and laws. and handling of those proceedings. failed. showed that this man was a member of the Communist Party. He admitted that he had been a member of the Communist Party in the days when that party advocated the overthrow of this Government by force. As I understand. that was admitted by the Supreme Court the other day in the opinion which it rendered against his deportation. If that is correct. there is no defense. The Senator cannot defend a man in my presence by saying that he is honest. that he pays his debts. that he does this. that. and the other. when he advocates the overthrow of this Government by f6rce. I believe that he ought to be deported from this country. I think it is a shame that he is allowed to stay here.
