Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790089761

I think it is important that those who seem actually to favor a world state accept in good faith the principle here laid down. I cannot imagine anything more likely to bring about war than the attempt to Intervene in the domestic affairs of other nations. Our people would deeply resent it if there were interference with our immigration policies. our tariff policies. or our agricultural policies. There is some tendency in the present Organization for the great powers to consider themselves as policemen of the world. To my mind it is vitally important that we accept the fact that every nation is sovereign within its own territory. and that we do not propose to interfere with its political or economic policies.
