As a representative of the Colonization Society and an administrator and a leader of men. the name of Jehudi Ashmum will never be forgotten wherever and whenever the story of Liberia is told. When Ashmum sailed for the United States he handed over the reins of the administration to Rev. Lott Cary. who remained at the head of affairs at Montserrado until the arrival of Dr. R. Randall. who was appointed by the society in Ashmums place. By this time the number of the American emigrants had .reached nearly 3.000. and the designation of the chief administrative authority was changed to that of governor. The first Governor of Liberia was a white American named Thomas Buchanan. At the close of his administration he was succeeded by Joseph J.
