Session #79 · 1945–47

Speech #790026682

Let us intensify our fidelity to the Constitution. which expressly prohibits the making of any law against the free exercise of religion and. by clear implication.. forbids discrimination against anyone because of race or creed or place of birth. During the First World War. President Wilson said in an address to the Daughters of the American Revolution: Some of the best stuff of America has come out of foreign lands. and some of the best stuff in America is in the men who are naturalized citizens of the United States. * * * The vast majority of them came here because they believed in America. and their belief in America has made them better citizens than some people who were born in America. They can say that they have bought this privilege with a great price. Multitudes of Jews. including Judge Frankfurter. who have come to the United States from other lands deserve their full share of the general compliment which the great Woodrow Wilson thus paid the patriotic and the praiseworthy of foreign birth.
