They were French. Czech. Jewish. Catholic. and in some cases antiNazi Germans. Their names had been checked over by the Justice Department. and then they were sent to the State Department. But when they went to the State Department. nothing happened. Two and onehalf months passed. and out of this list of 651 refugees only 15 were approved by the State Department for admission into the United States. Finally the Presidents Committee on Refugees began to ask questions of the State Department. and when their questions remained unanswered. Mr. McDonald. the chairman. came to Washington and went to the White House direct.
