Session #78 · 1943–45

Speech #780224296

Mr. Chairman. I and my associates feel that the Congress and the American people are faced with another and most serious drive to undermine and ultimately destroy the whole policy of restriction upon immigration into the United States. It has been shown that upon humanitarian grounds it is infinitely preferable that all refugees from Axis territory be cared for temporarily in north Africa. and that the probability is that not only will these refugees not return to the land of their birth but also that there are millions in Europe who will probably be forced to migrate elsewhere on the conclusion of hostilities. Any refugees admitted into the United States now who have children born on United States soil will raise the question that they should not be deported because to do so would involve either the separation of the family or the deportation of an American citizen. If additional legislation is necessary to establish more refugee camps in north Africa. I will urge my associates to support it. However.
