For he knew by the contrast of direct experience what American freedom and opportunity can mean. He was born in Meseritz. then in Russia. on February 5. 1888. and was brought to this country at the age of 2. His family settled on New Yorks lower East Side. in the same district which he later represented in Congress. a district that isa wonderful mirror of the fortitude and aspiration of the immigrants who have brought us so much of value. Michael Edelstein had a hard youth. He left school when his father died and became a telegraph messenger boy in order to help provide for his mother and five younger brothers and sisters.
