Session #78 · 1943–45

Speech #780163187

Whereas the committee bill would merely permit evidence to be considered which occurs after the bill becomes an act of the Congress. The other particular in which the Johnson amendment differs from the committee bill is in the fact that. in the committee bill. proceedings are star chamber. secret. behind closed doors and drawn curtains. in an office which the Attorney General may select and before some official of the United States whom he may designate. Under the Johnson amendment all proceedings having to do with decitizenization will be had in courts of naturalization. of which there are 2.000 or more in the United States. Bear that distinction in mind. The committee. bill is vicious. unAmerican and wrong. the kind of a bill which we should fight with all the strength at our command.
