Session #78 · 1943–45

Speech #780151473

Chairman. anyone who follows Ernie Pyle and other correspondents cannot help from experiencing a rather disgruntled attitude toward anyone or any group that continually injects cheap polItics into the affairs of state at this time. Many years ago a Civil War veteran in my home community had received a pension of some $10 or $12 a month up until he was 75 years of age. He was then notified by the Pension Department at Washington that he was not a citizen of the United States aid. therefore. could not receive a pension. The man was an immigrant from Canada. He had not taken out all of his citizenship papers. but he was uhder the impression that his service in the Army had made him a citizen. He had voted for 50 years.
