Session #78 · 1943–45

Speech #780106833

Mr. Chairman. I. too. was at one time a member of the Immigration Committee. and while a member I am sure I had the reputation of being rather strict and rather opposed to allowing people to come into the United States. and I have been criticized somewhat by some of my very liberal friends for that. I still feel that a strict policy of limiting immigration to the number that we can absorb is a sound policy for the United States. But I recognize that times do change. even though the gentleman from Idaho didsuggest that we should go back 82 years and legislate on the basis of conditions as they existed at that time. We are now engaged in what we call an allout global war.
