Mr. Chairman. I want to talk for a moment or two about the statements that have been made in this debate that the witnesses before the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization consisted mostly of ministers. missionaries. and idealists. and also about the insinuation that the gentleman -from Minnesota belongs to this list of professional "dogooders." and so forth. and is not practicalminded. I heard General Marshall this morning discuss the situation concerning the World War. If there was any impression I got from General Marshall it wa3 that he Is a "hardboiled" professional soldidr up at the top of his profession. Admiral Yarnell testified before our committee and gave exactly the same Impression of himself. He is a "hardboiled" seadog of some 50 years experience. who was Commander in Chief of the Asiatic Squadron from 1936 to 1940. and who knows something about the situation in the Orient concerning the war. I wish to quote from his testimony to show you that that "hardboiled" gentleman. the opposite to any idealist or missionary or minister. has this to say. Admiral Yarnell said: In conclusion. it is my conviction that the repeal of these laws will have farreaching effects as a war and as a postwar measure. It will also be a partial recognition of the bravery of a great people who for 6 years have been fighting Americas most dangerous enemy. The further testimony of Admiral Yarnell went to show that he considered the repeal of this measure as one of the most effective means of saving lives. American lives. in the Asiatic combat zone. and I do not believe that any Member of this House would accuse Admiral Yarnell. seadog that he is. with the long experience and the responsibilities that he had on his shoulders. of being an idealist of any kind. He considers first. last. and all the time the material. practical welfare of this Nation. and. according to his testimony and other testimony. there is only one nation in the Orient that can preserve the peace after this global war Is over. and that is China. and we will have to look to China to do it. and all we can do to help China and build up a strong China between now and then will be to our own future good.
