Speech #780106271

You are brave and stoical. industrial. honest. and honorable. Save for one minor interruption. we have always been at peace with you. During the difficult period of the settlement of our West. the importation of "cheap Chinese labor" brought with it a wave of alarmed misunderstanding and prejudice on the part of some of our people. There was no justification for this fear. Even under the 1930 census there were only 46.129 Chinese people in our country. We have more than that number of European refugees in a few months. Since February 12. 1912. China has been a member of the family of republics.
