Session #78 · 1943–45

Speech #780068700

We have many friends among the Chinese people. We recognize the problem. however. as the gentleman has aptly referred to it. as being an economic problem. Of course. the entry of 100 or 105 Chinese people. even if they were coolies. would not amount to a great deal as far as creating an economic problem in our Pacific States is concerned. It must also be recognized that the problem presented Is presented to the three Western States in very large measure. because these people seldom get beyond the Pacific coast. When they arrive there they find a salubrious climate. and they like to stay. just as do others. The gentlemans committee proposes to admit 105 Chinese per annum. Without taking a position on ti1t particular matter. I am interested to know whether the gentleman and his committee are also interested in admitting other Asiatics after this war is over -in some similar volume or greater or less volume.
