Session #78 · 1943–45

Speech #780040752

Mr. Speaker. late yesterday I learned that an Allied conference on the refugee problem was to be held next week in Bermuda. The chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs has been" invited to attend that conference. but no member of the Coinmittee on Immigration and Naturalization of the House was invitedthe committee that will have to act upon all immigration questions that pertain to refugees. I have therefore introduced a resolution todayand I hope for prompt action thereonempowering the Speaker to name three members of the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization who shall attend the refugee conference at Bermuda as an official delegation of this House. and who shall make a report thereon to the Speaker and to the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization. Inasmuch as I have not consulted anyone on my committee concerning this resolution. and as it will be impossible for me to attend the conference. my resolution must be accepted for what it is. an impersonal protest against the fact that no member of the committee that will have to pass on legislation concerning refugees was invited to the conference.
