Session #78 · 1943–45

Speech #780023374

It has been the custom here for many years always to grant more easy citizenship to those who serve in the armed forces of the country. and I am sure this Congress would maintain that policy. but I call the attention of the gentleman from Mississippi to a statement in the first part of the committees report: The purpose of the bill is to further expedite the prosecution of the war through amending the Nationality Act of 1940 (54 Stat. 1137). so as to enable certain noncitizens serving honorably in the armed forces of the United States to be naturalized immediately upon satisfactory evidence of their loyalty and attachment to the principles of the Constitution. even though their admission to the United States may not have been in full technical compliance with all of the requirements of the immigration laws.
