On. no. not unrestrictedly. I came here 4 years ago and appealed to this Congress. under certain protective conditions. of course. to open Alaska to refugees. The Interior Department was in favor of this proposal and had even worked out a plan by which a group of Christians and Jews who were capable of building up Alaska could be settled there. We would have done our duty as human beings. we would have saved the lives of some fellow men. and at the same time we would have had some devoted and loyal subjects to develop Alaskan resources and to defend Alaska against any possible attack by our common enemy. The question was raised that the people might not stay in Alaska but might go on to the United States proper. and we safeguarded this by putting in a provision that refugees would have to remain in Alaska for quite a number of years before they would be permitted to enter the United States proper. The Interior Department was attacked for its stand on this measure. I was attacked for sponsoring the billin short. the restrictionists wonno action was taken on the bill and the people we could have saved. perished in the blood bath Hitler needed for the purification of the Aryan race.
