Getting back now to the matter I. started to speak of when interrupted by the gentleman from Ohio. there was a certain judge in Hoboken who swore in about fifty or more German seamen from German boats. swore them in as citizens. men who had all their relatives. wives. and children in Germany. and who paid taxes in Germany. These people had no intention to take on the duties as well as the privileges of American citizenship. They now have citizenship in this country. granted them by certificate. the same kind of certificate loyal. naturalized citizens secured following the long and precise requirements of the law. There were a number of societies made up of people of German blood which should have been investigated much more thoroughly than they were. I have nothing against the German people. but when they seek to undermine our Government. whether the people be German.
