Session #77 · 1941–43

Speech #770061042

I never will forget all the great constitutional logic that was spun out on this floor as to whether it was a bill of attainder or an ex post facto act. I am going to throw my effort into that hopper. too. because this afternoon I am going to drop this bill in the hopper: Be it enacted. etc.. That on and after the tenth day following the enactment hereof. it shall be unlawful for Harry Bridges. defendant. in the deportation proceedings pending on June 10. 1941. before the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the United States Department of Justice. to be and/or remain in the United States or any other place subject to the jurisdiction thereof. There is no attainder to that. and no ex post facto. That is going to make it unlawful for Harry Bridges to be anywhere within the United States or any place subject to its jurisdiction.
