Session #77 · 1941–43

Speech #770057804

President. I wish to correct the statement made by the distinguished Senator from North Carolina that "all the powers of the Government" have been futile in the attempt to deport Harry Bridges. "All the powers of the Government" have not been so used. Harry Bridges has been supported and maintained in this country through the efforts of the Secretary of Labor and the Bureau of Immigration. and I think it is time to call public attention to. and place the responsibility for. the subversive acts of those who have brought about the defeat. in a degree. of measures for national defense. and of the reform of the abuses of the immigration laws. Mr. President. in this connection I may call the attention of the Senator from North Carolina and of the Senate to the fact that on January 6 last I introduced a bill providing for the punishment of persons who escaped or attempted to escape from the custody of officers or employees of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. and on March 27 I introduced a bill to prohibit the admission Into the United States of immigrants who are nationals of certain countries. Here it is the 5th day of June and no action has been taken on those reformatory measures. because they have been held up in the Bureau of Immigration.
