Session #77 · 1941–43

Speech #770006076

A generation before found their fathers speaking of "kultur". which they thought was the product of the race of supermen. We have had trouble with the Government and leaders of that people. several times in American history. For proof. ask Woodrow Wilson. ask Theodore Roosevelt. ask Admiral Dewey. ask Grover Cleveland. or ask any one of the millions of German immigrants who fled from the fatherland and came to this country to escape its oppressions. Some say that our President has been too sharp in his characterization of these aggressors and that he should have been more diplomatic. I can scarcely see how he could have gained any less of the contempt of Hitler. or of Mussolini. if our President had exhibited lamblike meekness in his speaking of them or agreeing with them.
