The story of his life was a romantic oneand yet with all its independent elements he emerged from a country that today is held up as a tyrannical despotism. Carl Schurz was born in Germany. He was educated In. the Gymnasium of Cologne and he became a revolutionary in political. life and finally an exiled refugee from his native land. Driven from Germany after the revolution of 1848 he came to America in 1852 and settled in Wisconsin. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and after the war was over he settled in Missouri and then became in 1869 the first Germanborn American to be elected to a seat in the Senate.
