I suppose he was about 24 or 25 years of age. He could talk very little English. but I was his tutor. and I taught him the English language in the lumberjack style. He came from Germany as a refugee. He fled. He hid himself on a Hamburg steamship and came to America. His idea was to get away from conscription. because one day. as he illustrated to us on the floor of the kitchen. in came three German soldiers. headed by a "blitzkrieging" sergeant. and stamped the butts of their muskets on the floor and said: "We want the boy." He was clever enough to get away from them. and he is now the owner of a big farm in the State of Wisconsin and has children and grandchildren. and is a naturalized citizen.
