If we can deport a tradeunion leader. we can deport a person because we do not like the race from which he comes. or do not like the church in which he worships our Creator. or because we do not like the color of his hair. in fact. just because we do not like him. From time to time in this country we are subject to waves of antialien hysteria. Any Member of this House who cares to consult the files of the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization. the Committee on the Judiciary. the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce. the Committee on Labor. can readily see the great number of bills against the employment of aliens and realize that we are again in the midst of such a period. We must. of course. take necessary measures to defend our country. to prepare against attack from without and within. but that is no reason why we should throw away all judgment and attack everybody merely because a label has been p.nned upon him. Such a procedure is unAmerican. undemocratic. and a terrible indictment of the way in which democratic processes function under strain. If the committee which considered this bill received evidence which shows Bridges is a Communist or is affiliated in any way with the Communist Party the course of action is clear. Our immigration laws provide for the deportation of such individuals upon service of a warrant and upon a fair hearing. The committee states that in hearings upon a general bill it received .ufficient evidence to justify the introduction of this special bill.
