Speaker. I think we ought to pause for a moment and analyze the procedure that we are following here -and then ask ourselves the question as to whether or not we should feel ashamed of ourselves. We are asking that the Congress of the United States. in all its dignified might. direct the deportation of one individual. The only basis upon which that request is being made is a statement contained in the supplemental report accompanying the bill to the effect that Bridges is regarded by the framers of this bill as a menace to the interests of this country. In other words. we are asked to deport one individualall of Congress against this one individualbased on the conclusion contained in the report from this committee. Bridges was not given any hearing before the Committee on Immigration. He was not permitted to be heard before the Rules Committee. This is the first time in the history of this country that a man is being convicted and sentenced without being given an opportunity to defend himself. Any alien. no matter how heinous the crime may be for which he is being deported. is given a hearing. He is given a hearing before the immigration officials. Then that hearing is reviewed. It is reviewed before a Board of Appeals of the Labor Department.
