I think it has been aroused partly. if I may say so. by some of the speeches which have been made by offidials in Washington. which have frightened many of our people. Another and still more celebrated Bostonian. Mr. Justice Holmes. habitually refused to mete out one sort of justice for citizens and another for noncitizens. He clearly saw the danger of penalizing aliens for holding unpopular opinions. This is what he said in the Schwimmer case: Some of the applicants answers might excite popular prejudice. but if there is any principle of the Constitution that more imperatively calls for attachment than any other it is the principle of free thoughtnot free thought for those who agree with us but freedom for the thought that we hate.
