I had been appointed first by Mr. Wilson In his first administration. then I had been reappointed. and then. as I recall it. two or three events followed. Just at that time the expulsion of the socialist members of the New York Legislature occurred. and that brought the matter further before the peoplethis whole matter of the fight against the socalled radicals. and then. very soon afterward. the warrants of deportation. that is the original departmental warrants. were held up. proceedings had to take place under those warrants. hearings. in other words. they were taken up and considered personally by Assistant Secretary Post of the Labor Department. and it very soon became evident that a large number. or a certain proportion. at any rate. of the aliens who had been arrested in these raids were not going to be deported eventually. Then. as I remember it. there was a discussion over whether or not the Communist Labor Party was in the same category as the Communist Party. and just about that time. if I remember correctly. ir. Ralston. a number of lawyers sent in letters. and this committee of 12 was formed. but exactly when I do not know.
