There is an alien hysteria in this country today. The alien is being blamed for everything that is happening all over the world. The Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization assists an alien from the time he enters the country and tries to assimilate that alien and prepare him for citizenship. and I do not see how that work is going to fit in with the work of the Department of Justice. I do not see how they are going to get around this particular phase of the service. I do not think that this phase of immigration and naturalization is law enforcement at all. requiring a transfer to the Department of Justice. This does not mean that I do not have enough faith in Mr. Jackson. whom I believe to be one of the ablest and most capable Attorneys General we have had. I might have agreed with a plan to transfer to the Department of Justice the divisions in the Labor Department handling warrants for deportation. based on smuggling. or anything else involving a crime which the Attorney General may want to prosecute. but they should have left and continued the present status of Naturalization and Immigration Divisions in the Department of Labor.
