By making it almost impossible for them to be citizens. There was a time in the history of this country when the National Manufacturers Association sent agents to southern and eastern Europe. and to Ireland and various other places. and their agents pictured a beautiful land here and said. "Come on overbig wages. good living. hospitality. and a keen desire to help you." People believed them. They sold their few belongings and were herded into steerages. They greeted the Statute of Liberty with tears in their eyes. and their hearts were swelled with the desire to become Americans. raise their families as Americans. and to become an integral part of a great democratic Nation. No sooner had they turned their heads. they found themselves in Ellis Island.
