Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760114373

I thank the gentleman. I simply want to say that this is another evidence of our intention to require court conviction in order to protect an alien charged with a violation of the law from unwarranted deportation. We seek to place around an alien the protective arm of the law and reaffirm our faith and confidence in the courts of the United States. Some of those who have been so bitter in their opposition to this very bill. less than 2 years ago voted down an amendment by the distinguished gentleman from Alabama which sought to place the protecting arm of the courts around American citizens and the property of American citizens.
