Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760058911

Dwight asked that that census not only include the number of inhabitants. but that it group the natives of this country and the aliens and the citizens and the children of aliens. At this time the supervision of the census was given to the Secretary of State. In 1810. the census was taken under the direction of the Secretary of the Treasury and its duties enlarged. and at that time they required the enumerators to make a note of the manufacturing establishments in the United States. and to make a further return as to how many naturalized foreigners there were in America. As you will notice. during all this time the matter of taking a census was a very simple one and it is only in recent years that it has grown to present proportions which are very large and most interesting. In taking the census in 1830 and 1840. its functions were still further enlarged to cover economic data in this country.
