I should say to the Senator that the machinery of operation is not properly oiled. I know the Senator from Texas was extremely interested last year and the year before in the question of deporting from this country alien criminals who were being held here. The Senator will recall that we had before us the names of more than 3.300 criminal aliens who had been arrested. who were under bond. who were being forcibly detained here. when in truth and in fact they ought to have been sent back where they came from. They were detained here because the Department of Labor said. "These people should not be deported. By so doing families will be broken up." Those cases were described as hardship cases. I went to the Department of Labor and personally asked the man in charge to pick out for me 25 or 50 of the socalled hardship cases.
