Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760006680

In addition to that. Great Britain has an agreement with the Netherlands. to protect her interests in the Dutch East Indies. So Great Britain has vast interests in the East. in fact. a great portion of her Empire and of her wealth is found in oriental and Asiatic waters. Very well. now let us see what are the interests of Uncle Sam. If Senators will study the statistics as to the trade we have done with China and the Orient for the past- 15 or 20 years. they will see that we have not made any money out of it. because in order to maintain our position there. to maintain our prestige. in order to "keep face" in the parlance of the Orient.-we have. of necessity. been occasioned to keep in the Pacific a large fleet at a tremendous cost.
