Session #76 · 1939–41

Speech #760003226

No.. I want to get the record straight. as we say. and I say this to my good friend. the ranking member on the Republican side of our committee. We passed in the last Congress the Dies bill. which would save the deportation of 8.000 aliens of good character who had family ties in this country. but who were technically deportable. We tried to save them by allowing them to stay if the Dies bill became a law. We passed that bill in the House by a vote of 6 to 1. and it got to the Senate during the last week of the session.. as all immigration bills do get to the Senate at that time. The bill died there. Under that bill we would have allowed these people to stay. Presently. technically. they are subject to deportation.
