Within the borders of this Republic are millions of persons who were born in other lands. Many fled from persecution to enjoy the liberty guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States. and because of the persecution to which they were subjected by reason of racial. religious. or political differences. Not only from Germany. but from Russia and other countries. noble and patriotic persons have been compelled to seek asylums in other lands. in 1848 the policies of Germany compelled thousands of German citizens to seek homes in other lands. and from Russia many persons were driven because of the wrongs to which they were subjected. A citizen of Germany. who became a great American patriot. found refuge in this Republic. and his voice was heard upon various occasions in behalf of the downtrodden and oppressed in other lands. On the 1st day of February 1882 a great mass meeting was held in New York to protest against the persecution of the Jews in Russia.
