Session #75 · 1937–39

Speech #750147198

Likewise the European peoples. being as highly developed as ourselves. were themselves supplying to one another. in an increasing degree. all that their people could consume. So it was logical that we should turn toward the Orient. Now in the course of the last threequarters of a century. we have seen a considerable opening up of the Orient and have profited. to a certain extent. by exports to the Asiatic nations. We have likewise received from them much in return. But do not let us forget that this trade has been accomplished under considerable handicaps and with considerable cost to ourselves.
