As rapidly as the Mississippi. Several thousand people. large quantities of household equipment. livestock. and farming implementsi also were brought to safety in Memphis through the efforts! of volunteers. many of them doing heroic duty in the face. of hazards seen and unseen. The United State Coast Guard. which well might be called the Red Cross of the sea. rendered invaluable aid in thel Memphis area.
